Fraumunster: this stunning 9th century church, which started life as a Benedictine abbey, is one of the most impressive attractions in the city. Despite is age, it’s often the modern stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall that attract visitors in their droves, and these windows are best viewed in the early morning light.
There are also some other stained glass windows here by Augusto, the cousin of Alberto Giacometti. Fraumunster began life as a church in the 12th century, although the spire dates back to the 18th century.
Bahnhofstrasse: shopaholics will be in their element here as this street has been described as the most beautiful shopping area in the world. The road is pedestrianised, which gives it a nice feel and makes it great for idly wandering around. You’ll find some of the world’s biggest brands represented here, so it’s not a place for bargain hunters.
Grossmunster: Zurich’s largest and most impressive cathedral is also the symbol of the city, easily recognisable with its imposing twin towers. The Romanesque and Gothic cathedral has a rich history and was said to be originally owned by Charlemagne.
Botanical Garden: provide an excellent place to get away from the city and enjoy some tranquillity. The collection of plants here totals over one million and covers a variety of different ecosystems.
Urania Observatory: is located between the Limmat River and Bahnhofstrasse. Through the telescope, you can get some excellent views of both the city and the Alps in the distance.
