Winter sport: Zermatt has a reputation as being one of the finest resorts for winter activities. Skiers and snowboarders will love the variety of terrain and pistes available. There are four main areas; Klein Matterhorn, Sunnegga, Schwarzsee and Gornegrat. There is also a link to Valtournenche and Cervinia in Italy. In total, there are over 300kms of pistes as well as some excellent off-piste slopes for the more advanced.
Hiking: there are plenty of good trails in the surrounding mountains and a printed map is available from the tourist information office. The Matterhorn Trail is particularly good and takes about three hours to complete.
Mountain biking: there are few better places to enjoy the sport of mountain biking than the area around Zermatt. Bikes can be hired from shops in the town and then taken up on the ski lifts that are open during the summer. A mountain bike map can be purchased from the tourist information office. A good place to head for is the Rothorn area, which is suitable for most standards.
