The medieval Old Town has delightful cobbled squares and some great cafes to relax in. There is plenty on offer during the summer and winter to keep the visitor occupied. Lucerne also serves as a good base if you want to explore the surrounding areas and mountains.
Hof Church (Hofkirche): dominates the city skyline and is the most important Renaissance church in Switzerland. It dates back to the 17th century, although the site originally had a Benedictine monastery during the 8th century. The impressive pipe organ has over 6,000 pipes including a 33-foot bass pipe. The 200-foot tower offers some wonderful views over the city and Lake.
Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke): is one of the most popular sights in Lucerne. The main water tower is part of the 14th century bridge that spans the River Reuss. Inside are some paintings that reflect the history of the city, together with some biographies of St Leodegar and St Maurice.
Swiss Transport Museum: can be found at Lido beach and has exhibitions and models on trains, planes and automobiles. There are several life-size replicas as well as a miniature steam train. The space travel section features an unused project Mercury capsule.
Mount Pilatus: is a nearby mountain and has spectacular views over the city and surrounding areas from its summit. The easiest way to get to the top is by a three stage cable car from the small town of Kriens. Another option is to take the world's steepest cogwheel railway from the town of Apnachstad. Those with plenty of energy can take one of the hiking routes from Kriens.
