It is a major transportation hub with excellent high-speed rail services to other destinations in Europe. The city has some wonderful architecture including the cathedral and several top museums. The two major universities ensure that there is a varied and busy nightlife.
The Olympic Museum: is the second most visited museum in Switzerland, and features permanent and temporary exhibitions for both the summer and winter Games. The museum was opened in 1993 and is located in the Olympic Park gardens on the shores of Lake Geneva.
Cathedrale Notre-Dame: is the largest cathedral in Switzerland and is built in a Gothic style. It was completed in 1275 and has undergone extensive renovations. The impressive interior has a huge vaulted ceiling and the southwest tower has some of the most impressive views across the city and Lake Geneva. The town crier, in a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages, shouts out the hour between 10.00 and 14.00.
Cheteau de Chillon: although it's a short train ride away, this beautiful castle is worth visiting not only for its historical interest, but also the beautiful setting next to the Lake. The castle was built in the 11th century and is now one of the most popular attractions in the country. It is best to arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
Collection de l'Art Brut: is an interesting display of paintings by untrained artists. Most of them were patients from institutions or inmates at a prison.
Musee Historique de Lausanne: covers the history of Lausanne from the earliest days through to the present. The displays include numerous images, documents and maps with the highlight being the handcrafted diorama from the 16th century.
