Worldwide surveys suggest that Geneva ranks high in terms of quality of living and although the city is expensive, it makes for an excellent tourist destination. Geneva is a good place for those who like museums and galleries with a wide range of options.
The Museum of the International Red Cross is one of the most famous and interesting and also has some good multimedia activities. Art lovers will be enthralled by MAMCO (Musee d'Art et Contemporain) and the curious museum that celebrates the achievements of Swiss people overseas is also well worth a visit.
There is plenty to do in the surrounding areas with the towns of Montreux and Lausanne popular places to visit, while the famous French ski resort of Chamonix and Mont Blanc are just a few hours drive away. Chillon Castle popularised by Lord Byron and Henry James is an impressive site.
Geneva doesn’t have a wild nightlife scene, but if you enjoy good food and a trip to the theatre or ballet you will be in your element here. There is plenty of good French influenced local food to indulge in with fresh fish from the lake and excellent cheese.
Geneva has a reasonable if unspectacular events calendar, dominated by the Bol d’Or Regatta on the lake, and of course in winter skiing takes over. Geneva Cointrin International Airport is a significant airport in the region served by a range of carriers, and the city also has excellent road and rail links, both domestically and within Europe.
