Theatre and Classical Music: the principal venue is the Theatre Basel in the city centre. The three stage theatre consists of the Grosse Buhne, which features operas and ballet; the Schauspielhaus, used for drama and comedy; and the Kleine Buhne, which has smaller drama productions. The Symphony Orchestra Basel performs in this venue as well as the Stadtcasino Basel.
Swimming: although it's only recommended for good swimmers, the Rhine is a memorable place to take a dip and popular with the locals. It's only possible during the summer months when the water temperature is warmer. Check the strength of the current and water quality before entering. If you don't want to swim very far or just fancy sunbathing, then head to either end of the Badhysli. There are also several public pools in the city.
Shopping: Basel has a good variety of shops from large department stores to expensive boutiques. The main shopping district runs from Clarastrasse to Marktplatz and from Freiestrasse to Heuwaage. As you would expect in Switzerland, there are some good jewellers and chocolate shops. The Spalenberg area has more speciality shops and artisans and is an attractive area to stroll around. There is a fleamarket on Saturdays in Petersplatz.
