Boasting more than 10,000 residents, Zofingen in northern Switzerland's Aargau canton is the district seat of the same name. Having been inhabited since ancient times, the city offers a wealth of heritage in the form of an old monastery and parts of its old city walls. There are even remains dating to the Roman era, namely the Hirzeberg farmhouse with its well-preserved mosaic floors. Other buildings of interest include an old armory, a quarantine house, a library and a schoolhouse - all listed as heritage sites of national importance. Many of these sites are within walking distance of Zofingen hotels. There are a handful of museums in the city at which visitors can learn of the area's extensive history, as well as a small zoo, which makes for an ideal day out for families. Just outside the city are superb hiking opportunities and nature trails that offer views of the Alps and the Wigger Valley. Zofingen is at the junction of two major roadways, with the A2 connecting it with Lucerne to the southeast.
