Introduction to Zillis, Switzerland

Having been inhabited as early as the 9th century, Zillis has a wealth of history with which to lure visitors. Although not a major tourist destination, this compact municipality in Switzerland's Graubunden canton features comfortable Zillis hotels for overnighters. The community forms a single municipality with neighbouring Reischen, with visitors easily able to cover much of Zillis-Reischen on foot. Eighty per cent of the 500-or-so residents here speak German, but Italian speakers are also welcomed, with the country's border just to the south. Sightseeing in the community centres on visits to the Romanesque Church of St Martin, in the north of town, best known for its remarkable illustrated ceiling. Another must-visit place is the Roman site of the Cave under Hasenstein. Listed as Swiss heritage sites are the bridges of Premoli and Wildener. The E45 runs north-south to the west of Zillis, connecting with Thusis to the north and Andeer to the south.
