Wiler primarily serves as a base for trips to Lauchernalp ski resort, to which it is connected by cable car. This small holiday village is where most of the action takes place, but visitors may prefer to return to the quietude of Wiler hotels at the end of a day on the slopes or a night of apres-ski at the resort itself. This German-speaking area of southern Switzerland, in Valais canton, offers beautiful alpine views as well as first-class tourist amenities in the form of chalets, sports shops stocking ski gear and eateries. In summer, the cool mountain climate is ideal for hiking, with trails like the Lauchernalp Fafleralp and the Hockenhorngrat taking walkers on memorable journeys through the mountains. Lauchernalp, one of Switzerland's little-known yet highest ski areas at over 3,000m, features 33kms of pistes and a free-ride area for snowboarders. A handful of chairlifts and a gondola are on hand to take skiers to the slopes. Good roadways, which are kept clear in winter, and a car train serving nearby Goppenstein provide access to Wiler.
