Introduction to Walenstadt, Switzerland
Walenstadt rests on the shore of Lake Walen, after which it takes its name. This municipality of Switzerland's St Gallen canton is divided into five towns: Walenstadtberg, Walenstadt, Knoblisbhul, Tscherlach and Berschis. The municipality's most famous structure, the Paxmal, is situated in Walenstadtberg. This Karl Bickel-designed building is a monument to peace. Bickel, a Swiss artist, built the monument between the 1920s and 1940s, with Museum Bickel Walenstadt detailing the construction. Getting between all five areas of the community is easy using the local bus network, while trains and the A3 connect the municipality with other parts of the canton. Two notable Swiss heritage sites make for worthy visits: the prehistoric hill station of Berschis and the early medieval St Georg Chapel, both on St Georgenberg. Walenstadt hotels make for convenient bases for daytrips to the Liechtenstein capital of Vaduz, 30kms to the west. This city on the banks of the Rhine features a cathedral and a castle. other spellings: walenstadthotels, walanstadt hotell, walenstatd hote, walenstedt otel, walenztadt hotle
