Introduction to Vogorno, Switzerland
A convenient base for visitors to Locarno, Vogorno lies in so-called Italian Switzerland. This southernmost region of the nation is served by Locarno Airport and is inhabited by Italian speakers. In Vogorno, a charming village on the east bank of Lago di Vogorno reservoir, visitors typically pass the time on the water or simply soak up the authentic Swiss village atmosphere. Daytrips to Locarno, 14kms southwest, provide ample sightseeing opportunities. Here, tourists can wander the narrow lanes of the old town and take in the Santuario della Madonna del Sasso and the Visconteo Castle. The latter is occupied by the Municipal and Archeological Museum. A funicular takes passengers up to an old monastery. Vogorno also makes for an ideal jumping-off point for visits to Lake Maggiore, to the west. Vogorno hotels are at their busiest during the annual Locarno International Film Festival in August. The twon offers quick rail links with Italy's Milan.
