Nestled between Martigny to the south and Saint-Maurice to the north, Vernayaz is one of many worthwhile stops in this Swiss alpine paradise.

Valais canton, in which the municipality sits, holds both German and French-speaking populations, with most of Vernayaz's 1,600 inhabitants speaking French.

Resort-hopping skiers can get into town by air through Geneva's international airport, just over 100kms to the west.

From here, trains run twice an hour to the municipality, passing through the cosy village on Saint-Maurice en route.

Aside from rejuvenating at Vernayaz hotels, hiking in the surrounding Alps and gorging on fondue, the Swiss national dish, there isn't much to do in town.

Most visitors use the small community as a base for daytrips to nearby attractions in Saint-Maurice, where a fairy cave, thermal baths, an ancient abbey and the Notre Dame du Scex Chapel are situated, with the highlight of a visit to this part of Switzerland being the outstanding alpine scenery.
