Thusis sits at the point where the Nolla and Hinterrhein rivers meet, in a district which shares its name with the latter river. This German-speaking Swiss community in Graubunden canton has little in the way of tourist attractions, yet Thusis hotels make comfortable overnight stops for travellers driving the E43 south to Italy or north to the cantonal capital of Chur, 25kms away. A Rhaetian Railway station serves the town, linking it with popular tourist destinations such as St Moritz, with parts of the route a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Beginning in Thusis at 697m, the railway takes passengers through valleys alongside the Albula River and across the Landwasser Viaduct to Filisur. After passing through a number of tunnels, one of which cuts through the Albula Pass, the line continues its escalation until it arrives at St Moritz.
