Introduction to Sursee, Switzerland

Resting on the north shore of Lake Sempach is the Swiss municipality of Sursee. This community in Lucerne canton was the 2003 winner of the Wakker Prize for the conservation of its architectural heritage. This is reflected in the number of well-kept historical buildings in town, including the Town Hall (Rathaus), the Market Place (Markthaus) and the Church of St George. The municipality acts as a convenient base for visitors to Lucerne, 26kms to the southeast via the A2. Lucerne itself offers interesting museums covering art and transport, as well as a well-preserved old town made up of narrow, winding alleys and squares. From Sursee, it is easy to visit the areas around the lake for scenic views, unspoilt countryside and outdoor recreation, such as horseback riding. While the community doesn't offer much in the way of major tourist sights, Sursee hotels make for ideal bases for those who relish the opportunity to simply observe an authentic Swiss town's way of life.
