Introduction to Stans, Switzerland

The first settlers of Stans, Switzerland set up shop in the 7th century, and as one might expect in a place with such a central location in Europe, the ensuing 13 centuries were rich in history. Its current aesthetic, however, is surprisingly modern as everything from Stans hotels to municipal centres had to be rebuilt following a fire in 1713 that decimated more than two-thirds of the town, now home to more than 7,000 residents. Along with improved fire codes, the planning of the rebuilt city left plenty of space for public functions and breathing in the fresh alpine air rolling in off the surrounding lakes and mountains. Dorfplatz, with its fountain and monuments, is the main square and a good place to start a tour. Must-sees here include the Church of Peter and Paul and the 16th century Capucin monastery. Stans is located between Flugplatz Buochs Airport and Lucerne along Route 2, which is Switzerland's main north-south connector. A trip to nearby Stanserhorn Mountain and the abutting tourist resort will be slower aboard one of the oldest mountain railways in the country, but the cable car that connects visitors to the mountain offers the best sights.
