Introduction to Solothurn, Switzerland
The number 11 is of intriguing importance to the people of the southern German-speaking Swiss town of Solothurn. Solothurn was the 11th canton to join the Swiss Confederation. The town has 11 churches and chapels as well as 11 old fountains and 11 towers. St Ursus cathedral has 11 bells and 11 altars. Cashing in on the trend is the local brewery, named Oufi, which is Swiss-German for, that's right, 11. The brewery produces Oufi beer. The city is home to 18 structures that are Swiss heritage sites of national significance. Among them are the Swiss Reformed Church on Westringstrasse, the Jesuit Church with Kollegium and the Visitation Convent. Also on the list are civic buildings including the old Armoury - today the Cantonal Museum, the town council house as well as the State Archives at Bielstrasse. Hip Solothurn hotels allow their guests to enjoy the town's history and culture at a leisurely pace.
