Introduction to Sion, Switzerland
Southwestern Switzerland's Sion, the capital of Valais canton, is on the map for a couple of stately castles. Valere Basilica, also known as Valere Castle, is a fortified church set on a hill. It faces the equally grand Chateau de Tourbillon, situated on the opposite hill. Another great religious site in Sion is Notre-Dame de Valere, which was built in the 1100s and 1200s and was named as a minor basilica in time for the 1984 trip of Pope John Paul II. What's more, the church boasts one of the oldest organs, built in 1435. Its pipes form a basic outline of a church. The larger pipes are in two towers. The complex was renovated in 1954. The attractive town and surrounding area is flat except for two jutting hills of rock. The town is happily approachable compared to many ritzier ski resorts. Sion hotels put their guests in excellent positions for exploring the town's culture and hitting the nearby slopes.
