Introduction to Schaffhausen, Switzerland
The architecture in Schaffhausen combines Baroque and Gothic styling, and the old town is filled with grand houses built by the rich merchants who once used the city to store cargo as they negotiated the rapids of Rhine Falls. The extent of the wealth of the merchants can be seen throughout the city, with oriel windows, fine sculptures and beautiful exterior frescos. Rhine Falls is the largest waterfall in Europe and the most powerful. Its width spans 150 metres and the water falls in a torrent from a height of 21 metres. The most significant architectural design is the Munot fortress, which dominates the city with its imposing round stronghold. It is possible to climb up to the battlements for a great view over the region. Another highlight is taking a 50km Rhine river trip, departing from Schaffhausen and winding its way to Untersee lake, past Stein and onto Kreuzlingen. This route is considered one of the most enchanting in Europe.
