Introduction to Savognin, Switzerland
Set near the Italian border in Graubunden canton's Albula district is the popular visitor destination of Savognin, a Swiss municipality originally settled on an important Roman and earlier trade route. Excavations at a large listed Bronze Age settlement on the southern edge of the village have yielded many artefacts dating between 1,800 and 1,000 BC, and the stately little village itself has many heritage buildings including its elegant 17th century Baroque parish church. The main street holds several quaint half-timbered mansions of former wealthy citizens, with 16th century farmhouses dotted around the edge of the village. Whether for the beauty of its short lakeside summers or its well-known ski offerings in winter, the village and the valley are year-round centres for tourism, with Savognin hotels well-geared for both seasons. The ski areas are great for families, with a designated ski park for children, ski schools and good facilities for experienced skiers and snowboarders, including extensive cross-country skiing trails.
