Introduction to Salenstein, Switzerland
Salenstein is a village and municipality in the far northeast of Switzerland. Part of the Thurgau region, the village is situated above Lake Constance, on the south bank of the River Rhine. This part of the Rhine doubles as the border between Switzerland and Germany. Part of the municipality is the hamlet of Mannenbach. Down by the riverside, travellers will find the local train station, Mannenbach-Salenstein, as well as a number of Salenstein hotels. The village is rich in history, hosting three castles that have been given National Heritage status. By far the most significant is Arenenburg Castle, which was built in the 16th century. It was once inhabited by Napoleon Bonaparte's brother and sister-in-law, the Queen of the Netherlands. Napoleon III lived here in his younger years before it was finally returned to Canton Thurgau in 1906. Nowadays, it hosts a chapel and a Napoleon museum. The whole of the castle and its 13-hectare park are open to the public.other spellings: salensteinhotels, salemstein otel, salensteni hotell, salenstien hote, salensetin hotes
