Introduction to Raron, Switzerland
The town of Raron is located in the Valais region of southern Switzerland. It is the final resting place of Rainer Maria Rilke, a legendary Austrian poet who spent part of his life in Switzerland. Visitors to Raron are able to visit his grave at the mountainside cemetery of Burgkirche. The town also hosts a unique place of worship in the form of St Michael's Church (Michaelskirche). It is housed inside a rock, seating at least 500 people, and is thought to be the largest of its kind in Europe. Travellers interested in unusual spectacles might like to visit on 25 September, when the town hosts its annual cow-wrestling event. The town centre is split into two parts by the River Rhone. There are some restaurants and shops on the north bank, but most tourists will be concerned with amenities to the south. Trains from Sion and Brig arrive on the south bank, while there are also a number of Raron hotels nearby. These hotels offer easy access to gondola lifts, which take around eight minutes to reach Unterbach, where the nearest skiing opportunities to the town are situated.
