Introduction to Olten, Switzerland
Situated in the north of Switzerland at a major rail hub with connections to the main cities of Bern, Zurich, Basel and Lucerne, all within a journey of half an hour, Olten is a well-placed and truly historic city with a number of attractive old buildings perched right on the Aare River. The Old City is undoubtedly the highlight for tourists here with its old bridge, which - with its unique wooden vaulted cover - is quite unlike just about any other bridge in the world. Like the Naturmuseum, the bridge is listed as a heritage site of national significance. The town's history dates back as far as the Roman Empire, during which time it was a settlement for a local garrison. Visitors are encouraged to come for the 1st August celebrations, when there is a firework display from boats on the Aare. Olten hotels are mostly located on the western bank of the river, close to Tannwaldstrasse.
