Introduction to Olivone, Switzerland

Since 2006, the small Swiss municipality and village of Olivone has been part of a new municipality, Blenio, formed of six villages. Olivone itself is home to around 800 people and lies in a deep river valley surrounded by jagged mountain peaks and high pastures. The village has a long history of around 800 years and holds a number of medieval structures, including a 12th century church containing important 17th century frescoes. Two 12th century hospices lie on Lukmanier Street, and the market square has been the scene of a weekly agricultural market for hundreds of years. Delicious chocolates made here have been exported to Italy and France for the last 200 years. Olivone has been a visitor destination since the 19th century, although its unspoilt ambiance hit a bump with the development of the Kraftwerke Power Plant in 1956. Olivone hotels are represented by one three-star inn in the centre and a further selection located between eight and 20kms away along the valley. The village is good base for hiking in summer, with the valley trail encompassing the historic and art treasures of the six villages. In winter, many winter sports fans arrive for skiing and snowboarding, with the pistes here especially suited to beginners.
