Introduction to Oberwald, Switzerland
The tiny Swiss village of Oberwald, home to 230 permanent residents, lies at the entrance to Furka Tunnel, below the Grimsel and Furka alpine passes. In the mountains high above the village is the Rhone Glacier, its melt the source of the mighty River Rhone. During the winter, the village is a charming but small-scale ski resort and in the summer, it's a focal point for hikers and walkers. All year round, the panoramic view of the Swiss Alps is breathtaking in its beauty. The tiny village has a rail station, with the line connecting through the tunnel to Breil and other towns in winter when the passes are closed, allowing cars to be transported by train. Since 2010, the station is also part of the Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway, a heritage line operating in summer, now proving a popular attraction for visitors staying in Oberwald hotels.
