Introduction to Niederwald, Switzerland
Niederwald is a village and municipality in the Valais region of southern Switzerland. It only has a permanent population of 42, but a number of Niederwald hotels have managed to become established here. The famous hotelier Cesar Ritz, owner of the Ritz hotels in London and Paris, was born and eventually buried here. A three-mile hike which begins and ends in the village tells the story of the man's life. The story is portrayed on seven panels which hikers pass on different parts of the route. Challenging at the start, the trail eventually becomes smoother and wider in a way that could be compared to his actual life. The village is also on another popular trail, the Rhone Path (Rottenweg). Hikers can join this trail at Niederwald Railway Station and continue as far as Oberwald. The full route from Ernen to Oberwald takes around six hours and is suitable for those with a moderate level of fitness. There is also skiing at nearby Bellwald, just 30 minutes away by car or public transportation. other spellings: niederwaldhotels, miederwald otel, niederwadl hotell, niederwlad hote, niederawld hotes
