Introduction to Murten, Switzerland
The picturesque medieval town of Murten lies on the small lake of the same name, between Lausanne and Berne in the Swiss Lake District of Fribourg canton. The town is fortified, with its city walls, towers and ramparts beautifully preserved for the most part and enclosing the medieval castle and the original winding streets and alleyways lined with ancient homes, little shops and elegant arcades. The lake itself, set on the edges of the Great Marsh, is one of a ring of three, together with Lake Biel and Lake Neuchatel. Seeing the sights in Murten can easily be done on foot as much of the town is pedestrianised.
