Introduction to Martigny, Switzerland
Its location at the junction of major highways to Italy, France and the rest of Switzerland is a clue to Martigny's long reach back into history. Roman armies, Celtic tribes and Napoleon's troops have all set up camp here at one time or another over the last 2,000 years. The Romans, in particular, left behind numerous traces of their civilisation, including an amphitheatre where cow fights were staged in the spring. There are several historical museums in and around Martigny, and preserved historical districts such as La Batiaz and Vieux-Bourg, but most people come here for its location near to Verbier and other Alpine ski resorts. Officially bilingual, the town is located in the relatively warm and sunny Velais district, making it a popular weekend get-away in the summer. This is Swiss wine, apricot, strawberry and asparagus country; all are highly prized in the local cuisine. Martigny hotels are a mixed lot, ranging from the elegantly restored resorts of the early 20th century, to spare-but-serviceable budget options. other spellings: martignyhotels, matigny hotell, martinny hote, martigny otel, hotesin martigni
