Introduction to Leuk, Switzerland

The hillside municipality of Leuk in the Rhone Valley area of the Swiss canton of Valais is set at the entry to the Gemmipass, an important Alpine crossing point linking Bern and Valais since the Roman era. Home to around 4,000 people, the municipality is the capital of the district of the same name and is known for the Leukerbad thermal baths located just to the north of the main village. The municipality contains 13 villages, including Leukerbad. The district's tiny settlements are ancient, nestling at the foot of bare peaks and often inaccessible during the winter months, with avalanches over the centuries causing devastation and rebuilding. Visitors to this traditional and historic region arrive both in winter for cross-country skiing and summer for the stunning walking trails leading to the top of the pass with its unrivalled views of the mountains and valleys.
