Introduction to Lenzburg, Switzerland
Set 30kms to the west of Zurich, the medieval town of Lenzburg was founded in the Middle Ages and is the proud possessor of Lenzburg Castle, one of the oldest and most significant castles in the country. Perched on a circular hill overlooking the Old Town, the oldest parts of the spectacular fortress date from the 11th century. The hill itself contains Neolithic burial sites and Roman remains as well as a museum, with the entire complex now a Swiss National Heritage site. Lenzburg's medieval history is displayed in its full glory in the Old Town, with its rows of multicolour houses, the imposing Town Hall, the Mullerhaus, the prison and Villa Malaga. Parts of the ancient city walls can still be seen, as can the 2,000-year-old remains of a Roman theatre, a vicus settlement and a burial ground. A good choice of Lenzburg hotels are found in the city centre, close to the main attractions as well as restaurants and bars.
