Introduction to La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland
Time is literally of the essence of this small commercial centre that has been known as a centre of Swiss watch making since the 17th century. When Karl Marx needed an example of a one-industry town for 'Das Kapital', he selected La Chaux de Fonds, describing it not very invitingly as a 'huge factory town'. The International Museum of Watch-making, housing the world's most comprehensive collection of timepieces, is located here. After Geneva and Lausanne, this city, a few kilometres from the French border, is the third largest in French-speaking Switzerland. It was virtually destroyed by fire and rebuilt in the 19th century, according to a systematic grid that differs markedly from the meandering nature of most European cities. The great modernist architect Le Corbusier was born here as Charles-Edouard Jeanneret in 1887; his first building is open to the public here as the Villa Jeanneret-Peret. None of the hotels in La Chaux de Fond suggest what would become Le Courbusier's celebrated international style. Most of the city's major public buildings, in fact, show a strong influence of 1930s Art Nouveau.other spellings: la chaux de fondshotels, lachaux de fond otel, la chauxde fond hotell, la chaux fond
