Introduction to Iseltwald, Switzerland
An idyllic little fishing village on Lake Brienz, Iseltwald is most popular with backpackers, skiers, and travellers from better known Interlaken, a 20-minute bus ride away. Five centuries after its first settlement, this German-speaking village has a year-round population that barely passes 500, in part because of the inhospitable lake winds of winter, which skiers don't seem to mind. The forest beyond the town is crisscrossed with trails and dotted with direction signs for cross-country devotees, and there are several downhill slopes nearby. In summer, water sports are the thing -- fishing, boating, water-skiing, and even surfing. Hiking trails along the lake and up into the hills are plentiful, allowing for everything from a leisurely after-dinner stroll to a day trek to higher ground. Iseltwald hotels range from pricey lakeside resorts to humble dorms. Not surprisingly, there are several restaurants specialising in fresh-caught fish. Several summer music festivals are staged in the region every year and every 12 years there is an international yodelling competition, the next one in 2018.
