Introduction to Interlaken - Outskirts
One of the most popular travel destinations in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland is Interlaken. Named for its location between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, this lovely mountain town has a river running through it. Backpackers love Interlaken hotels for the selection of affordable hostels, but well-heeled travellers will also find plenty of luxurious accommodation out of town. One of the highlights is Jungfrau, a beautiful mountain reached by the inspiring Jungfraujoch train route. Many visitors go to see Jungrau Aletsch Bietschhorn, a UNESCO glacier site above the town. Also worth a visit is Unterseen, a cool old alpine town just outside Interlaken. There are dozens of summer hiking trails around town that pass around the lakes or up into the mountains. Harden Mountain and Schynige Platte are two of the more popular routes. A slew of adventure sports can be enjoyed in the valley and hills surrounding Interlaken, such as paragliding, bungee jumping and rock climbing.
