Introduction to Ilanz, Switzerland

In the east of Switzerland in Surselva district, Ilanz is a typically scenic little Alpine town known as the first town on the Rhine River. A major market town for the surrounding area, Ilanz is also the gateway to the nearby Weisse Arena ski resort, which is a major draw in the winter season, between October and April. Aside from the nearby winter sports on offer and scenic walks in the nearby hills during the spring and summer, this is a town also well known for its heritage sites, including the ancient-looking Church of St Martin and Church of St Margreta, both of which are must-sees for visitors here. The Church of St Martin features a crumbling brick tower topped off with a stark black triangular spire that can be seen from throughout the town. Ilanz hotels are located on both sides of the river, particularly on Oberalpstrasse.
