Set in the centre of Switzerland, in the canton of Nidwalden, the tiny town of Hergiswil has fewer than 6,000 residents and was founded 800 years ago. Located along the banks of the lovely Lake Lucerne, at the base of Mount Pilatus, the town offers spectacular views from Hergiswil hotels set on the lakeshore. Visitors to this pretty town will find a number of interesting heritage buildings including the Thumigerhaus mansion, the parish church and old clergy dwelling, and a glazier's workshop and museum. The town lies just eight kilometres from Lucerne, and is home to the only glass factory in Switzerland, Glasi Hergiswil. Begun in 1817 and briefly closed down in 1975, the now reopened facility specialises in art glass and glass sculptures rather than the mass production of glass items. The museum displays the history of the craft of glass-blowing and even gives visitors the chance to blow their own piece, aided by a craftsman.
