Introduction to Guarda, Switzerland
Guarda is a charming, almost mystical village in the far east of Switzerland. The village has preserved its traditions so well that it received the Wakker Prize in 1975 in recognition of its architectural heritage. Its traditional houses have been renovated and sold off to residents looking for a peaceful location which offers easy access to outdoor pursuits. The best way to learn more about the history of these Engadin houses is to join a guided walking tour through the narrow village streets. The guide can tell the stories behind the painted facades which date back to the 17th century. The village not only has impressive buildings, it has a stunning location to match as well as several good standard Guarda hotels. Guarda sits high on a terrace at the top of a valley, overlooking the Inn River below. It is set against the backdrop of the stunning Engadin Mountains. A number of walking trails, such as the Schellenursli Trail, start from the village. In winter, the village becomes a popular destination with families courtesy of its children's ski-lift, ice rink and toboggan course.
