Famous for its 150-year-old history in the making of the superb Swiss timepieces, the city of Grenchen lies on a plain at the foot of the Jura range, in Solothurn Canton. Its 16,000 inhabitants are as proud of its architectural heritage as they are of their craftsmanship, with Grenchen having won the Wakker Heritage Prize in 2008. Founded 1,000 years ago, the city is a mix of modern and medieval, with its entire old quarter a Swiss Heritage site that is popular with visitors staying in Grenchen hotels. The watch and clock industry in the city began in 1851, and continues today, with a good number of manufacturers providing jobs and boosting the local economy. A small local airport provides connection for business travellers, with charter flights as well as general aviation, and the rail network connects with Basle through the Grenchen Tunnel. Road transportation is via the A5. Nearby is the capital of the canton, Solothurn, the country's largest Baroque city.
