Formerly a separate town in its own right, Gordevio in 2008 merged with neighbouring Avegno to become Avegno Gordevio. The architecture is one of the highlights of this town close to the Italian border. The SS Giacomo e Filippo parish church, which dates back to the 17th century, features impressive paintings by Giovanni Antoni Vanoni, who worked during the first half of the 19th century. There is some debate over the painter responsible for the striking frescoes in the adjacent ossuary but most historians attribute them to Giuseppe Antonio Felice. Art buffs should not miss either of these two fine efforts when visiting the town. Aside from these church buildings, the town is mostly made up of houses dating back more than 150 years. Gordevio hotels are in short supply, with most located in the very centre of town, between the stream that runs close by and Via Cantonale, the main road.
