Introduction to Gondo, Switzerland
Right on the border with Italy in the Swiss district of Brig, Gondo is an Alpine village with a historic legacy that dates back to the Roman era. Built on the Simplon Pass, which was used by the Roman Empire as a route for legions going to battle, the village nowadays makes for a scenic walk that takes in the town and its environs. Gondo's military history extends to the 20th century, when the Swiss Army built an Alpine fortification here, Gondo Castle, that is today a visitor's centre that is open to the public. Aside from the Simplon Pass, there is a hiking trail from here that goes to Italy for those looking to trek farther afield.
