Introduction to Goms, Switzerland
Goms is a delightful region, in Upper Valais, south-central Switzerland, which is home to magical alpine villages of wooden houses and beautiful churches. This is a paradise well worth exploring at all times of the year. Hiking is great during summer while skiing and more snow sports are popular during winter. This is a high, sunshine-filled area that is the uppermost valley touching the Rhone River. The valley elegantly sprawls over 50kms from Brig to Gletsch, which is a village at the bottom of Rhone Glacier. These villages are small, but rich in attractions. Altogether they hold some 70 Baroque, whitewashed chapels and churches with sky-piercing white spires. Meanwhile, many of the old wooden houses have been blackened by exposure to sunlight. The nearby and mighty Aletsch Glacier is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. It's great fun getting around by train on the Glacier Express line that links Davos, Zermatt and St Moritz. Goms hotels place their guests in the centre of an area where there's plenty to do and see.
