Introduction to Goeschenen, Switzerland
Goeschenen is a small village in Uri, southern Switzerland. Those travelling by train will find that this community of 430 people is the last stop before entering the nine-mile long Gotthard Rail Tunnel. Visitors can learn more about the tunnel's 19th century construction at the Visierstollen, smaller, 120-metre long tunnel whose entrance is below the St Barbara sculpture. This sculpture is situated outside the train station. The tunnel doubles as an exhibition which tells the story of the Gotthard Rail Tunnel's planning and construction. Guests staying at Goeschenen hotels also have the chance to take a ride on the Schollenenbahn train to Andermatt. This train is notable for crossing the notorious Devil's Bridge, which spans the breathtaking Schollenen Gorge. Nowadays, this train crosses the newer Devil's Bridge, but travellers are still able to see the older version from the train. Village accommodation offers easy access to skiing, hiking and cycling opportunities in the St Gotthard Mountains, depending on the time of year.other spellings: goeschenenhotels, goeschemen otel, goeschenne hotell, goescheenn hote
