Introduction to Glarus, Switzerland
Glarus, the smallest canton capital in the country, nestles in a valley below the massive Glarus Alps mountain range, close to the Lichtenstein border. A popular destination for hikers, walkers and climbers, the town and its canton are famous for the manufacture of decorative textiles. This is an ancient region, bearing traces of the world's history such as dinosaur footprints, fossilised marine life and a rich geological heritage. The pretty traditional town, overlooked by the vast bulk of Glamisch Mountain, lies on the Linth River, with most buildings dating from after the disastrous fire in 1861 which destroyed much of the previous settlement. This charming town sees many visitors staying in Glarus hotels during the year, including winter sports enthusiasts arriving for the skiing and outdoor activity fans and ecotourists attracted by the carpets of spring flowers and the warm summers. The town's symbol is the elegant neo-Romanesque church, built in 1861 after the fire, and its claims to fame include the delicious fresh Glarus cheeses, the frequent exhibitions of contemporary art and the lovely Klontalersee mountain lake.other spellings: ralushotels, larus otel, rarus hotell, lalus hote, laris hotes, raris hotle, lalis hotes, ralis
