Located less than 30kms and a short train ride from busy Lucerne, Fluelen is a tiny port city with an economy that relies more on light-cargo shipping than on tourism. Visitors are usually day trippers, or travellers bound for the big city and beyond. The port itself is exceptionally picturesque, especially in summer, when vacation sailors in great numbers tie up here for a meal and a bath. Sailing and fishing are popular, as is the full range of water sports - swimming, waterskiing and even surfing. Pathways around the lake are provided for pedestrians and bicyclists. There are numerous hiking trails for the more adventurous. Surrounded by Alpine forest and pastureland, the city and its environs are richly pine-scented and low-key. This German speaking city is known for its relatively mild weather, even in winter. Fluelen hotels are few and far between, but there are some choice inns tucked away in the adjacent hills.
