Faido is the district capital of Leventina, in the south of Switzerland. It is part of the Ticino region which borders Italy. As such, residents of Faido tend to speak Italian more than any other language. The village is situated in a valley at the foot of the scenic St Gotthard Mountains. It has been recognised as a Swiss Heritage site. This is due in no small part to the presence of three historic buildings; two churches and Selvini House. Faido hotels are mainly concentrated in the picturesque old centre, among well-preserved 16th century buildings. These hotels offer easy access to Piumogna Waterfall as well as other hiking opportunities on the mountainside. Here, travellers have the chance to explore other quaint villages. Visitors should try the local beer, which is actually brewed in the village. Travellers can get here by train from Zurich, Locarno or Basel. The station is located around a mile northwest of the village centre.
