The village and municipality of Eschenz lies in the canton of Thurgau, in Frauenfeld district, close to the outflow of the River Rhine from Lake Constance. Surrounded by rolling hills and agricultural acres, the little settlement is home to just over 1,000 people. Freudenfels Castle, established in 1812, is the area's main landmark, although the settlement itself goes back many thousands of years to Neolithic times. To the northeast of the village on Werd Island are several fascinating prehistoric shore village sites. Eschenz itself was first mentioned in 799 AD for its fortifications. Eschenz hotels comprise one attractive inn and a few self-catering rentals, bed and breakfasts, and guesthouses. Just across the water is the medieval old town of Stein am Rhein, famous for the stunning frescoes painted on the ancient buildings lining the streets. The city walls and gates are still to be seen, and the Imperial Abbey is an important example of Gothic architecture. Hohenklingen Castle overlooks the town from a forested hill, and the market square with its medieval Town Hall is an unspoilt reminder of times gone by.
