Erstfeld is a town of nearly 4,000 people in central Switzerland.

The town is situated at the start of the Gotthard Railway's northern ramp and as such, the town's depot stores all of this route's rolling stock.

Therefore tourists visiting the town are mainly railway enthusiasts.

Visitors can visit the InfoCentre, which tells the story of the new Gotthard Tunnel's construction as well as the train depot itself.

There are also a couple of hiking trails which start from Erstfeld, such as the Pack-Animal Trail and the Railway Trail.

While exploring the mountainsides and the valley floor, hikers will come across a number of quaint farmhouses scattered around.

The easiest way to get here is by flying into Zurich and completing the journey by rail or road.

In addition to the Gotthardbahn, the town has easy access to the convenient Route 2 motorway.

Much of the town's commercial activity centres on Gotthardstrasse, where the train station is located.
