About five miles from the southern end of Lake Zurich in northeastern Switzerland, Einsiedeln is a town with a long history. It is famous for its abbey, which legend dictates Christ consecrated himself. In the intervening period, this majestic piece of architecture has gone through a turbulent period but remains in remarkable condition following restorations and additional work throughout the centuries. The highlight is undoubtedly the magnificently detailed painted ceiling, while chess buffs will be interested by the library, which contains the earliest known mention of the game in 997 AD. Einsiedeln hotels catering to the many pilgrims who visit the abbey are numerous and generally located on Hauptstrasse in the heart of the town, close to the abbey, making walking tours convenient and straightforward.
