Introduction to Disentis, Switzerland
Set high on the slopes of the beautiful Rhine Valley, the Swiss village of Disentis is both a summer and winter tourism resort. It's also the home of the oldest and largest of Switzerland's Benedictine monasteries, Disentis Abbey, founded in 720 AD, with its present extensive complex dating from around 1700. The spectacular white and gold interior of the monastery church draws visitors year-round with its peace and beauty. Surrounded by mountains, glaciers and rushing rivers, the pretty village lies at the highest point in the valley, where the Lukmanier and Oberalp Pass roads meet, and has rail connections with Valais and Chur. Its 2,000-plus population speak mainly Rhaeto-Romance, and the area is an important centre for the ancient language. A hub for tourism for over 100 years, the resort offers cross country and Alpine skiing in winter and hiking in summer, with Disentis hotels and apartments providing over 10,000 beds.
