Diemtigen is a small town of around 2,000 residents, just 33 miles south of Bern in central Switzerland. Along with the neighbouring village of Oey, it is a popular base for hikers visiting the idyllic Diemtigtal Valley. The valley has over 120 miles of walking trails, many of which are suitable for families. The town has managed to preserve the atmosphere of a traditional Swiss village despite the appearance of a number of Diemtigen hotels. In 1986, this effort led to the award of the Wakker Prize for Swiss heritage. The best way to see the most historic farmhouses is by completing the Diemtigtaler Hausweg walking trail. The trail currently includes three paths which cover the scattered settlements in the valley. While walking in the valley, hikers should look out for alpine dairies where they can watch cheese making in the summer. Travellers can get here by taking a Postbus from Oey's train station, around six miles north of Diemtigen.
