Introduction to Cugnasco-Gerra, Switzerland
Located in the very south of Switzerland, close to the Italian border, Cugnasco-Gerra lies close to the Magadino Valley in a hilly area with an elevation around 1,500 metres above sea level. It's a collection of small settlements around the twin towns of Cugnasco and Gerra. With its beautiful scenery and old stone buildings, there is plenty to see and do here. In the Gerra Valley there is a 500-year-old mill and a house dating back to 1470, a sign of just how long ago this place was settled. Yet the main historical sights are the oratories, or chapels, of S Martino a Ditto and SS Anna e Cristoforo a Curogna, recognised Swiss heritage sites. Cugnasco-Gerra hotels are few and far between given how small the towns are - in fact there are fewer than five in the whole area, all of which are upper mid-range. This is a great retreat in summer when the weather improves, with excellent valley walks that go in and out of the nearby forest and up the surrounding mountains to provide spectacular views.
