Actually two towns, Crans and Montana, this resort in western Switzerland is famous for its cross-country skiing (it regularly hosts World Cup events in the sport) and for its spectacular views of some of the major peaks of the central Alps, Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn.
Situated on a plateau some 1,500 metres above sea level, this French-speaking town is one of Switzerland's busiest family ski resorts.
Downhill slopes rise from the plateau another 1,500 metres to the Plaine Morte glacier.
No less challenging is the less steep but far longer, descent down 12kms along the Piste Nationale.
Snowboarding, snowshoeing and skating round out the winter sports program.
In summer, the town gives itself up to golf.
There are several 18-hole courses here, including the tournament-level (and very posh) Severiano Ballesteros.
Off the links, there are facilities for hiking, climbing - both mountain and glacier - and various water sports on its five swimmable lakes.
In good weather, a daily tram runs from Montana up the mountains to Sierre, known for a beautifully preserved and restored old quarter.
Crans Montana hotels offer accommodation from luxury to basic.
